How to install an EPDM roof
A general overview for a fully bonded sheet roof. Use the installation manual, detail drawings and safety data supplied for your chosen membrane, adhesives and trims. Product-specific requirements take priority over this overview.
01 Before you start
Confirm the roof structure, drainage, insulation and condensation design are suitable. Arrange safe access and edge protection before work begins. Check the weather and the temperature limits on every adhesive label. Do not work on a wet or unsafe roof.
02 Prepare the roof deck
The deck must be sound, securely fixed, clean, smooth and dry. Remove debris and protruding fixings; repair damaged boards. Confirm substrate compatibility before bonding. Do not assume an existing covering or exposed insulation is a suitable bonding surface.
03 Measure and position the membrane
Allow enough material for every edge, upstand and termination before ordering. Unfold the sheet, check its position and let it relax as directed by the manufacturer. Keep it free from tension and confirm all details can be covered before cutting.
04 Bond the main roof area
Fold back part of the sheet without moving its position. Use the approved adhesive and application method for your deck. Some water-based systems are applied to suitable timber only and laid wet; contact products use a different method. Follow your actual product instructions.
05 Smooth the sheet and complete the bond
Bring the membrane onto the adhesive progressively, avoiding trapped air, debris and wrinkles. Smooth it using the tool and pressure specified for the system, without stretching the rubber. Repeat across the remaining area and observe the stated curing conditions.
06 Finish upstands, corners and penetrations
Use the system’s approved perimeter bonding, flashing, primer and termination details. Contact adhesive may require coating both surfaces and allowing them to flash off before joining. Pipes, rooflights, outlets and cut corners need dedicated waterproofing details; a decorative corner cap does not replace flashing.
07 Fit edge trims and wall terminations
Match drip trims to drainage edges and raised trims to edges that retain water. Our trims are 250 cm (2500 mm) long. Follow their fixing, joint and sealing instructions. Wall terminations must prevent water getting behind the membrane. Do not rely on sealant alone.
08 Inspect and look after your roof
Check bonding, flashings, corners, terminations and clear drainage paths before leaving the roof. Protect the membrane from tools and later trades. Follow curing and access restrictions, and inspect periodically for damage or blocked outlets. Ask for advice before attempting repairs.
For joints, unusual substrates or complex roof details, request the correct system detail before starting. Adhesive coverage, open time and curing vary by product and conditions. Use the label and safety data for ventilation, protective equipment and ignition precautions.
